The mortar is actually the Demolisher cannon barrel from the new Russ kit I got from bits. You can see where the plasticard is and the general idea of what I have going on here. The conversion is really simple using the contents of the Chimera kit and the Demolisher barrel with a bit of plasticard to fill the gaps. The internal mount for the mortar is made from the dozer blade mount cut just after the crossbar with the remaining U shaped piece being notched into the main mount and angled back to the floor as a brace.

I filled the lasgun ports with punched circles of plasticard made using a paper punch. The lasguns are being saved for another project (the Russian themed army with the AK-47 style lasguns)and just would not look right on the mortar carrier. Another bit of detail is the spotting site on the mast on the rear of the hull. This is quite simple. The mast section is the comm array that is included in the Chimera kit with the searchlight mounted at the top of the mast.

ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting idea. Shame you don't have a how-to for it. I'd like to see how the gun is put together; hard to see in the finished piece.
ReplyDeleteI've been playing with ideas on how to convert a Griffon, but have been focusing on using the new Hellhound kit. This is much easier. I may have to snatch this idea and try it. Thanks.
Simple and highly effective conversion. Nice
ReplyDeleteLooks fantastic! Simple, and you could certainly figure out a way to make one double as a hydra too. A good update for an oop model.
ReplyDeleteI will be posting a how to once I get these finished and get the eventual 2 more going to round out the group to an even 6. Yeah, I find that the simple conversions are often the best.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the mortar goes, it is nothing more than a non-detailed plasticard box that was thrown together that is just big enough to fit between the prongs of the dozer blade attachment with the Demolisher cannon glued on. It is actually very simple and not much to see. Since you cant see much in these ones I am simply paiting the insides flat black.
One of the last ones built will be detailed in and out with a crew and everything with the rear hatch open.
Sweet conversion!
ReplyDeleteYou say the execution is simple, but often it is the Idea that counts - and this is a nice idea!
