Now in color!

Greetings all, just a quick update on my Griffon project. They are being painted in the following steps:

Flat black primer
Drybrush hull and sides with dark metallic
Paint the tracks with a rusty red-brown
Drybrush tracks with orange
Drybrush entire tank in steel
Wash with brown followed by black
Apply rubber cement mask for chipped paint effect
Paint tan, let dry, rub areas with masking to peel off and leave chipped paint effect
Highlight exposed metal with silver
Paint a thin line of brown at the top edge of paint chips and a lighter tan on the bottom edge of chips for forced lighting effects on the paint chipping
Paint markings, lenses, other details
Black wash

I have not highlighted the chips yet, but here is the first one thus far...

The front view shows off really well how the rubber cement masking really achieves the chipped paint effect I am after...

Enjoy!

  1. Nice, first blog I have seen using this technique in anger. Have you tried two toning the chips? eg Red for the Iron oxide rust preventor layer then black or dark for the 'undercoat' then the Tan layer? simulates wear in 'Islands'

    More please

  2. Greetings CommissarHarris. I assume by your statement of using the technique in anger you mean on a vehicle of war? In regards to the chips, I am still detailing those and will post picures of the details as soon as I get them done.

  4. I'm excited by your cunning use of the rubber cement mask technique, which is not often seen in the 40k modelling scene. Its more common in the Scale modellers scene.

I'm greatly looking forward to the shots with the chips detailed!

    More please!
